Simplified grid and PV system protection as per FNN notice

The FNN notice: “Simplified connection and verification of generation systems and storage facilities with grid connection in medium and high voltage” specifies the requirements of the two regulations NELEV and EAAV. Among other things, the FNN notice allows for a considerably simplified implementation of the decoupling protection device, largely according to the principles of the VDE-AR-N 4105. The requirements of the FNN notice can be implemented with SMA components. Depending on the characteristics of the system, different requirements apply to protective measures and settings

Realization of grid and PV system protection in accordance with the FNN notice "Simplified connection according to NELEV and EAAV" for systems from 135 to 270 kW by means of the AC interface switch integrated in Sunny Tripower X 60, Sunny Tripower X 25, Sunny Tripower Storage X and Sunny Tripower 125 is possible under the following conditions:

Requirements:

  • A suitable firmware version must be installed on the Sunny Tripower (see product manual)

  • A certain country data set must be set in the Sunny Tripower. Additionally, a specific device parameterization must have been performed (see product manual).

  • Depending on the device type, an SMA I/O Module must be installed (see product manual)

  • An external, central, and certified grid protection unit with alarm contact, designed as a potential-free break contact must be present in the system. The sum of switching and measuring time must be ≤ 100 ms.

  • Connection of the integrated digital inputs in the inverter or the I/O module installed in all inverters with the external grid protection unit

The manufacturer's declaration for the affected inverters can be found under the following link: Realization of grid and PV system protection in accordance with VDE-AR-N 4105:2018-11, Chapter 6.4.1 Method C, for 30 to 135 kW plants and in accordance with the FNN note "Simplified connection according to NELEV and EAAV" for systems from 135 to 270 kW" and at www.SMA-Solar.com.
